Medicare: Quality Standards For Hemodialysis

Legal Eagle Eye Newsletter for the Nursing Profession

November 1995

Quick Summary:  HCFA has published new regulations which took effect October 18, 1995 governing Medicare conditions for coverage of end-stage renal disease services.

Medicare regulations now incorporate by reference and make mandatory the recommended quality standards set forth in "Hemodialysis Systems" (1992) and "Reuse of Hemodialyzers," (1993), publications of the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation, 3300 Washington Blvd, Suite 400, Arlington, VA 22201-4598.

HCFA has noted that it expects the new regulations will have only a negligible effect, if any, on beneficiaries and facilities, since it believes that the standards it has now made mandatory throughout the Medicare system were already widely accepted industry practice among vendors of hemodialysis supplies and hemodialysis services providers.
